Jin Chen is a Ph.D. student at the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. Her research interests encompass film studies, gender studies, and modern Chinese cultural studies. Chen’s current research focuses on women’s screenwriting practices in early Chinese cinema, examining gender dynamics and creative processes during the formative years of the Chinese film industry. Through the analysis of unexplored archival materials, her work aims to illuminate the often-overlooked contributions of women to the development of Chinese cinema and culture.
Looking ahead, Chen plans to extend her interest in Chinese film history into the less-studied area of northwestern film production of modern China, with a particular focus on women’s activities within it. This continuation intends to further enrich the understanding of modern Chinese film history, bringing to light its diverse regional and gender-related dimensions.
