Hosted by the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong and co-organized by Korean Film Archive and Asian Cinema Research Lab (ACR Lab), Destination Hong Kong: South Korean Cinema’s Encounter with Chinese-Language Cinemas is a conference that will explore how South Korean cinema was shaped by a trans-regional network that included the cinemas of Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and mainland China from the 1950s to the twenty-first century. The two-day conference will bring together leading and emerging scholars and experts of South Korean and Asian cinemas from the Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America, to present their research findings and new developments in theory and methodology. The conference will include approximately 9-12 academic papers and a roundtable discussion consisting of scholars, archivists, and film critics. Currently, we invite 20-minute presentation papers from scholars and graduate students. Papers presented at the conference will be developed and then considered for publication in a special issue of a high-ranking peer-reviewed journal, and/or an edited volume with a major international press.
To apply, please send an abstract (300 words max) and a short biography (150 words max.) to Ms. Helena Chung ([email protected]) and Dr. Sangjoon LEE ([email protected]). The deadline for applications is 20 February 2025. We will notify the accepted abstracts at the end of February 2025. We do not support travel and accommodation. Though, we may support, even partially, a few graduate students or individuals who are financially limited.
